Pros and cons of Onkyo HF Player - Hi-Res Music app for iPhone and iPad

Onkyo HF Player - Hi-Res Music app good for

I bought the HD player Pack - There is no option to play flac files. I added them from icloud and they dont show in the Onyko player. - The instruction for copying files to the player dont apply anymore. - There is no file transfer option in iTunes for this application.
The developers have done an amazing job. I was skeptical about the value of upsampling the sound; I figured if its already downgraded to 256 kb/second, the damage has already been done. I am very happy to be mostly wrong in this case. Im sure Im going to be buying the HD upgrade soon, so that I can see how well this handles actual HD files, since it does a great job on lower bitrate files, even without the use of the equalizer. I was just looking for a replacement for the Denon Audio app, which appears to be a bit of an off for now, Im glad I found this as a replacement. Apples own aggravating music app is no match for this. The only thing that I would change about this app would be to turn up the sensitivity of the touch screen when adjusting the equalizer. It only seems to pick up that youre pressing on one of the handles when you start moving it. So sometimes you end up tapping more than once and end up creating additional handles that you dont need. This, however is something I can live with, since its just a question of realizing what the app is doing and remembering it for the next time. A fantastic thing that I discovered was that the equalizer scale can be expanded or reduced by pinching outward or inward as necessary giving you more or less resolution as you need. A nice touch. Thumbs up to the Onkyo Corporation for this app!
An amazing app; I would like it more if it could boot up faster. Is the boot up animation really necessary?
Very good EQ. But if Onkyo if you read reviews I would really be happy if you could extend the eq down to 20 Hz and if you could show the actual eq curve that is being played and not the curve created by connecting the dots. But the EQ going down to 20 Hz would be soooo useful and I would be so happy if you could add it. I would probably buy the pro version just to support you guys if you made the EQ go down to 20 Hz and your app would truly be a 5 star app uncomparable to the other apps. Thank you for the great app with lots of free content to offer.

Ive been using this app for several weeks now almost daily and love it. Not the sleekest interface and crashes every once in a blue moon (not catastrophically, just close and reopen the app), but those factors cannot detract from a five star rating. Because the sound this app puts out is.....incredible. I paid the $10 to get the FLAC capability and dont regret a penny of it. Using an iPhone 7 with this app straight to Shure SE215k earbuds, or out to an Oppo DAC and then to HiFiMan he-400i headphones, the sound that this app is capable of putting out is absolutely reference-quality. For the first time, I can honestly say I can use my PHONE to do some critical listening. The manual equalizer is great, the pre-installed equalizers are great. Basically, I love this app. Great job, Onkyo! One suggestion for developers: find a way to list all music formats (FLAC and MP3) together instead of having to choose a Hi-Fi option to get to my FLAC files.

Some bad moments

Beware of sudden deafening blasts of white noise. I am very upset about this. This has happened to me several times and at least one other user has reported it so I know its not my phone. The sound quality is great and I loved this app but those unexpected blasts from some bug made me switch. I value my hearing too much. Im using Marvis now for my lossless files and I think the sound is even better. Hopefully Onkyo can fix this for its users. It has happened over the last two or three app updates and on the last two or three minor IOS updates so all my software is current. If I see an update that specifically addresses this issue Ill be able to update this review. It has happened when opening the app and when the music is interrupted by an incoming or outgoing phone call.
I really like the interface with few exceptions. There is NO way to delete a full album. Only specific songs. The app is not very stable. Also, if you are using an external DAC and leave it for a while not playing (e.g. after the album has finished) you will need to restart the app, as it loses connection with the DAC. It is not an iOS issue as other applications do not have this behaviour. That is almost killing the app and makes me want to uninstall it. Which I will probably do, even I have bought the hi-res feature pack. It is VERY annoying. I do not recommend it until the bugs are fixed. UPDATE: The App update on April 18th did NOT fix the disconnect-while-idle issue.
Has some great features. Air drop sync of .flac files is awesome! Why cant I do that with Apples Music app? When its playing, it sounds great! But Onkyo HF Player has some serious bugs with current iOS. Worst is the hanging between songs. It just freezes up and clicks. Have to force quit the app. This limits it to long programs only, and force quit after each play. The UI also was designed for the classic 4" phones so does not look great on todays pluses. Thats a minor quibble compared to the hanging crashes. Please update this app and fix the crashes. I want to love it!
Not only is this app poorly designed but like many other apps it is not updated or maintained. When songs are imported they dont sync properly.
Dont buy this until problems are fixed. Was stable until the most recent update.
