Onkyo HF Player - Hi-Res Music App Reviews

PLEASE MAKE THE EQ GO DOWN TO 20 Hz!

Please make the EQ go down to 20 Hz. With that feature it would truly be the best app on the market. You make an app that can play hi-res files, but dont make the eq go down to 20 Hz, which is pretty illogical. The eq even goes up to 32k hz but only goes down to 32 Hz... Please please please extend the EQ down to 20 Hz !!

The player doesnt allow playing Flac files

I bought the HD player Pack - There is no option to play flac files. I added them from icloud and they dont show in the Onyko player. - The instruction for copying files to the player dont apply anymore. - There is no file transfer option in iTunes for this application.

not working.

apple does not allowed play tracks. drm problem. great

This is what Apple should have done with their Music app

The developers have done an amazing job. I was skeptical about the value of upsampling the sound; I figured if its already downgraded to 256 kb/second, the damage has already been done. I am very happy to be mostly wrong in this case. Im sure Im going to be buying the HD upgrade soon, so that I can see how well this handles actual HD files, since it does a great job on lower bitrate files, even without the use of the equalizer. I was just looking for a replacement for the Denon Audio app, which appears to be a bit of an off for now, Im glad I found this as a replacement. Apples own aggravating music app is no match for this. The only thing that I would change about this app would be to turn up the sensitivity of the touch screen when adjusting the equalizer. It only seems to pick up that youre pressing on one of the handles when you start moving it. So sometimes you end up tapping more than once and end up creating additional handles that you dont need. This, however is something I can live with, since its just a question of realizing what the app is doing and remembering it for the next time. A fantastic thing that I discovered was that the equalizer scale can be expanded or reduced by pinching outward or inward as necessary giving you more or less resolution as you need. A nice touch. Thumbs up to the Onkyo Corporation for this app!

Almost perfect..

An amazing app; I would like it more if it could boot up faster. Is the boot up animation really necessary?

EQ

Very good EQ. But if Onkyo if you read reviews I would really be happy if you could extend the eq down to 20 Hz and if you could show the actual eq curve that is being played and not the curve created by connecting the dots. But the EQ going down to 20 Hz would be soooo useful and I would be so happy if you could add it. I would probably buy the pro version just to support you guys if you made the EQ go down to 20 Hz and your app would truly be a 5 star app uncomparable to the other apps. Thank you for the great app with lots of free content to offer.

Blasts of white noise bug are deafening

Beware of sudden deafening blasts of white noise. I am very upset about this. This has happened to me several times and at least one other user has reported it so I know its not my phone. The sound quality is great and I loved this app but those unexpected blasts from some bug made me switch. I value my hearing too much. Im using Marvis now for my lossless files and I think the sound is even better. Hopefully Onkyo can fix this for its users. It has happened over the last two or three app updates and on the last two or three minor IOS updates so all my software is current. If I see an update that specifically addresses this issue Ill be able to update this review. It has happened when opening the app and when the music is interrupted by an incoming or outgoing phone call.

Best

Please add on/off starting animation

Incredible

Ive been using this app for several weeks now almost daily and love it. Not the sleekest interface and crashes every once in a blue moon (not catastrophically, just close and reopen the app), but those factors cannot detract from a five star rating. Because the sound this app puts out is.....incredible. I paid the $10 to get the FLAC capability and dont regret a penny of it. Using an iPhone 7 with this app straight to Shure SE215k earbuds, or out to an Oppo DAC and then to HiFiMan he-400i headphones, the sound that this app is capable of putting out is absolutely reference-quality. For the first time, I can honestly say I can use my PHONE to do some critical listening. The manual equalizer is great, the pre-installed equalizers are great. Basically, I love this app. Great job, Onkyo! One suggestion for developers: find a way to list all music formats (FLAC and MP3) together instead of having to choose a Hi-Fi option to get to my FLAC files.

Good and ugly

Great music playback with a really ugly interface.

Could be great - crashes on end of song with lock screen active

Has some great features. Air drop sync of .flac files is awesome! Why cant I do that with Apples Music app? When its playing, it sounds great! But Onkyo HF Player has some bugs with current iOS. Worst is the hanging between songs. It just freezes up and clicks. Have to force quit the app. This limits it to long programs only, and force quit after each play. The UI also was designed for the classic 4" phones so does not look great on todays pluses. Thats a minor quibble compared to the hanging crashes. Please update this app and fix the crashes. I want to love it! **** I was excited to get an update a couple weeks ago! Unfortunately, Im still getting a hard crash if its running a playlist with the lock screen active. It comes to end of a Flac song and does a "looping click" until I force quit the app. It doesnt seem to do this when the phone is unlocked and the app is in the foreground. Keep trying! Thanks.

Buggy. Do not buy until problems are fixed

I really like the interface with few exceptions. There is NO way to delete a full album. Only specific songs. The app is not very stable. Also, if you are using an external DAC and leave it for a while not playing (e.g. after the album has finished) you will need to restart the app, as it loses connection with the DAC. It is not an iOS issue as other applications do not have this behaviour. That is almost killing the app and makes me want to uninstall it. Which I will probably do, even I have bought the hi-res feature pack. It is VERY annoying. I do not recommend it until the bugs are fixed. UPDATE: The App update on April 18th did NOT fix the disconnect-while-idle issue.

Great Player, Okay Interface

HF Player and its features like EQ, Upsampling, and ability to play FLAC really makes it amazing. However, the UI and interface could use some work. For example, when queueing a song to listen to next, the queued song will skip over if you are on shuffle.

Great

I dont understand the ire directed at this app in other reviews based on what seem to me to be quite minor technical flaws. Bugs happen: Write to the devs and help them diagnose and improve the issue. Heres what others need to know: This app can use your existing iTunes library, picks up playlists (etc) flawlessly, and you dont have to do anything extra to manage your music (unless you want to). And your music will sound better right away. You can also tune the sound (with preset or custom equalizer settings) to suit your preferences and your particular headphones. And for all this, Onkyo charges you the sum of "0" - for the basic version anyway. Amazing.

Good, but cmon with the fades already

Ive been using this app for my music for a while now. If nothing else, the inclusion of a 11-band 64 bit equalizer makes this app an improvement over the stock music app. But Onkyo, for crying out loud please let us toggle the artificial fades at the song transitions!! I really dislike having my favorite songs suddenly fade out where I know there is no fade. A simple toggle would really help here..

Excellent sound for lossless

This app makes all of my lossless music sound significantly better than the built-in Apple music player. Its warmer, deeper, clearer, more fluid and has better stereo separation. Ive tried other apps and this is the warmest sounding. The excellent EQ is a really nice bonus for the few albums that need a little help. I also love how the full album artwork is large and completely unobstructed. Absolutely nothing is on top of the artwork when you touch it. The layout is great and the color scheme is easier on the eyes. The volume slider is fortunately built-in and is smooth, not in incremental steps. It can sort by artist, then album. My only wish is if it could sort an artists albums by date or at least show the date. My albums are tagged with the date and the dates show in the Apple app and other apps but they show blank in this apps info section. A minor detail that hopefully can be addressed. Im extremely happy with this app and love it. All of the bugs I mentioned in previous reviews were fixed, thank you!

In app purchase worth the $10. Best player for iPad

I cant speak to the equalizer; I dont use it. However, the in app purchase of the player is a great value. The best player Ive found for my iPad. Smoothed out the highs, opened up the mids and has decent low end performance. As close to high-end sound Ive heard on an IOS device. Get this app!
