Onkyo HF Player - Hi-Res Music App Reviews

Upsample for to DSD

If you have an external dac capable of DSD , this app is incredible . Upsamples my pcm files to DSD . That alone is worth upgrading to premium on this app .

Audio powerhouse with a few kinks

I have been using this app since it was first introduced. It continues to improve with every release. Although it is stated to be compatible, DSD128 and DSD256 are not working currently. If I copy either format into the app, it causes it to crash. Despite that, it takes everything else I throw at it and works great when paired with an outboard DAC. I can use Hibiki for my DSD128 and DSD256 files until an update is posted.

Functioning, but with a terrible glitch

The app is wonderful, that I wont deny. Its a seamless transition from the vanilla music app to this one; all your playlists, artists, etc. swap over. However, Ive encountered a terrible problem when it comes to actually *listening* to music—most audio tracks inexplicably lose an amount of time whenever you shift to a new time in a song. Say Song A is 5 minutes long. I skip to 3:30— I know what the song sounds like at that time, but instead I hear the song start from what would otherwise be 1:20. This leads to many songs ending prematurely. That said, I cant give this more than a 3 for such a fatal flaw being present.

Amazing with the right headphones

Just bought the Phillips M2L/27 the new headphones with a lightning connector. Then added the HD Player pack to this app, all I can say is amazing. Sounds better than other headphones I have costing 3 times as much. At last an all digital connection.

Great all-around media player. Does exactly as described.

I downloaded this app because my music sounded pretty crappy in my van when playing from my iphone. I was able to EQ everything easily and now it sounds much better. Ill be upgrading as well, so I can play my FLAC files with the app. Id highly recommend this to anyone who is unsatisfied with the way their music sounds or wants to play files that Apples native music app doesnt support.

Perfectly amazing!!!

I finally found the music player app Ive been looking for. I love the equalizer (thats what I was looking for the most). And it looks like it keeps track where you leave off. Brilliant app!

Support for *.wv files?

Please add support for wave audio pack files that have an extension of *.wv thank you :) Im currently using the paid version of your app & I think its fantastic. Please keep improving upon it by adding support for more file formats that are not currently supported.

My Go-To Music Player

I started using Onkyo player years ago so that I could play native HD audio files. After using it for awhile I learned to appreciate the high quality EQ and how it could compensate for the biased frequency response of my Etymotic Research in ear monitors and other output sources that needed correction without significantly degrading quality. NOW that Apple has completely destroyed the ease of use of their iOS music app by clogging it up with too many features that are directed towards bringing you to their store, I’ve made the Onkyo HF my one and only music app. It’s for music lovers who appreciate quality and don’t want the added complexity of Apple’s commerce-driven UI.

5! Put 5 Stars!!!

The developers are on point! My go to App, nothing close, and Ive researched.

Hands down awesome

Getting better and better with every update.

Please Update Instructions

I will only give this app three stars due to outdated instructions on putting files into the HD library from a MAC computer. The equalizer is nice to fine tune your music on the plus side. I paid the $10 for the HD Player Pack but saw no difference at all with this purchase. I used the DAC-HA200 headphone amp through a USB-to-ThunderBolt on my iPhone 6+. I have tried and tried adding HD music to the app to no avail. Please provide Macintosh based instructions (almost want to give two stars after paying).

Lacks Basic Features

I want to play from the genre menu, but there is no permanent play button. It will take me to a single album or song but inability to play randomly from a genre. Very disappointed in that I love the look of the interface.

Great Sound

Onkyo does it again. Great App. Equalizer allows you to set your music to your own perfect settings. Great Job!

Defacto Standard for Hi Res Audio on Smartphones

I simply wonder how one would get the most out of DXD, DSD, 32-bit FLAC or any other supported HiRes audio files without this app. It’s free to download, but to unlock its full potential $9.99 is a pinch! If you have a portable Digital-to-Analog Converter such as the Oppo HA-2 or iFi Nano, an iOS device and some really cool headphones/IEMs such as the Oppo PM-3s or Shure SE846, THEN you are a winner. This app passes the audio via the Lightening Port on your iOS device directly to the DAC for off board decoding and reports what its doing. It is simply fabulous. I have two issues that I am sure will be addressed soonest: 1. The playlists can be a tad more intuitive. Just get some developer with a love of playlists and they will sort that out in no time. 2. Apple Watch support for true remote control. That aside… 6 STARS from me. And I am a fussy audiophile.

Please refund the in-app purchased HD feature

Ive downloaded this app and purchases the HD feature in-app, but it ruins my iphone whenever I turn on the Onkyo app. It just hangs itself and make my iphone 6s with most recent ios unresponsive. Pls refund the money. Im deleting this app.

AMAZING - Must have if using an external DAC / Amp

This is the perfect equalizer for any headphones. I wont listen to my music through my phone unless i am able to equalize it through this app. With the in app upgrade of $10 (well worth it if using a portable DAC and HD files, in fact worth much more! If u are not DAC Ing it up the Equalizer is FREE and worth $20) It will catalogue hifi audio formats and convert your HD files (flag, WAV, MP3 :( ) from DoP to DSD up to 5.6 MHz with optional up sampling mode when using an external DAC, the choice between DSD or PCM playback-the choice between HD and SD equalization, an easy to use HD iTunes interface, and an aesthetically beautiful and intuitive user interface that will import the iTunes music and playlists stored on your phone automatically.

It works

Well it plays all your favorite hi res formats pretty well.. The UI is a little bulky/outdated and creating a playlist/navigating can be confusing. My major gripe with it is sometimes not playing files/having to reload them onto iPhone, this could be iOS issue but should be addressed. Also wondering why every time the app loads hd it has to rescan the library… this should probably be done in the background or something. Overall this is the best of all the hi res playback devices and is fairly consistent.

Room For Improvement

Overall nice app, look & feel is good, and ability to playback both lossy and lossless/HD music files is great- this is the main reason I tried the app. Some issues that need to be fixed- 1. The app does not resume playback after the audio stream is interrupted by a phone call. It has to be launched & the play button pressed to start again. 2. It is spotty in terms of recalling where it left off playing a file at times once the stream is stopped, particularly if there are a few hours in between usage. 3. Refresh of non-HD file additions requires manual closure & restart of the app before they will show up in the library, there is no synch button like there is for HD file additions.

Very pleased.

I was quite bummed out by the discontinuation of the Bongiovi DPS app. Im an audiophile and I take great pride in knowing I can listen to top quality audio regardless of the device. After quite a bit of shopping around I settled on this Onkyo app. The interface is smooth, and I like the fact that you can select artist, album, our playlist. When you select an album, the tracks appear in the correct order, a feature that other apps dont have. The EQ is relatively intuitive and responds quickly. The preloaded specialty EQ settings are also quite nice. Im still testing this thing out, but so far Ive had good experiences with two Bluetooth speakers, as well as the Bluetooth audio in my car.
